I was driving to Des Moines and heard about the
FairTax for the first time. I had heard of the Flat Tax, but not the Fair Tax. Apparently this is a bill that is working its way through Congress. It's interesting and I am tempted to say that anything has to be better than the current system, but its tough to swallow a 23% national sales tax! The details explain how this is really not all that bad but there are a few assumptions that have to come true to make it sound ok. Of course, I don't see our current system ever getting fundamentally reformed, much less scraped, in my wage earning years, or perhaps even lifetime. Call me a cynic, but there are just too many special interests involved in the current tax code to let the system be tinkered with in a fundamental way.
