Why Can't This Be Fixed?

5/28/2009 10:45:00 AM

I’ve been running some flavor of Win 7 for awhile now.  My problem still exists.  In fact, it has existed for as long as you have been able use plug-in-play drive devices.  You’ve probably experienced as well.  It has probably driven you a bit batty like it has me (along with a myriad of other things, many of which are not PC related).  I’ve submitted complaints, suggestions, bitches… you name it, but the problem remains the same.  You might have done the same.

What am I talking about? That FREAKIN’ (I would use another word that begins with F but this is a family blog) dialog box that pops up when you want to disconnect a removable hard dive that says that you can’t remove the device because some other process/application is using that drive.  Well, that is nice to know, but you you please tell me what F’ING application is so I can close it.  When I have 20 different windows open, and some may or may not or maybe did but are not currently using that drive, it is a PIA figuring out which one it is.  God forbid the app is actually a system tray app that Win 7 now conveniently hides the icon for.  ARGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can’t the OS say something like, “Sorry, but the DoofinSchwark application is currently using this device.  Close this application if you wish to remove the device.” or something equally helpful.  It’s the little things….. like knowing how to merge onto a busy highway.  Yeah, I’m talking to you jack @$$!!!!

have you tried to search the path of your usb device in process explorer and close what ever handle is there? it could be a dead handle. usually I just unplugged it though.

Or -

Why can't my applications flush their writes so I can yank the dang thing out whenever I want without corrupting the file system?

Its probably an issue of not being able to know what process is responsible for the handle. For example is it explorer.exe that has the hold, or is it the poorly written xyz file type preview handler that didn't properly release a file handle.

Its why a BSOD usually doesn't show the specific device that caused the BSOD. Sure the video card's driver may have caused the fault exception, but only because the sound card driver wrote outside its own memory and corrupted the video card drivers memory.

Just a guess.

As one of your four loyal readers, I totally concur!  It's the one big gripe I have about Windows on a regular basis.  Clearly they know a process is using it, which implies they know which process.  I'd even be happy with a pid so I could look in task manager!

I'm up to four readers?!! Wink

I'm sure it is not an easy issue to solve since it hasnt been done - or maybe its just been ignored, but it can be solved.  Agree with Matt Milner, even  aPID would be better than the current solution.

Yea, except I've had the window pop up even though there is NOTHING RUNNING.   It happens consistently with two of my USB flash drives.  Previously I thought some of the shims for 32-bit on 64-bit were causing it to be marked "in use"... but I went to Process Explorer and searched for a file handle to close..  no process is using the device.   So I shut down all the applications.  Nothing running except Win7 at this point..  and it still says that something is using it.
